WE ARE now ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR A FALL 2010 ADMISSION
The firm application deadline for a fall 2010 admission is December 15, 2009. All materials, including your electronic application and official GRE and TOEFL (if applicable) scores must be received by the December 15 deadline or your application will be incomplete and will not be reviewed for admission.
All new Penn State graduate applicants must file an electronic Graduate School application. Please refer to the Graduate School's "How to Apply" page for information concerning application fees. In addition to the Anthropology requirements, applicants must also satisfy the requirements of the Penn State Graduate School.
The following application documents can be uploaded to the Graduate School's application portal with your electronic application or sent directly to the department. If documents are mailed to the department, all application materials should be sent in one packet if at all possible.

Each reference that the applicant lists on their electronic application will receive an e-mail that details the reference submission portal on the Graduate School's application site. To avoid delays, please be sure you have entered a correct email address for each reference you supply. No special form is necessary.
The following items additional items must be mailed to: The Pennsylvania State University, Department of Anthropology, Graduate Programs, 409 Carpenter Building, University Park, PA 16802.
- Two (2) official transcripts from every institution of higher education attended, both undergraduate and graduate. To obtain your official transcripts, please complete a transcript request form.
- Results from a recent Graduate Record Examination (GRE) test. Penn State's institution code is 2660 and the department code for Anthropology is 1701 and for Archaeology the code is 1702.
- Application for a U.S. Visa . International applicants must submit official or attested university records with certified translations if the records are not in English. Notarized copies are not sufficient.
- Results from a recent Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, 213 for the computer-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the Internet-based test (iBT). The minimum composite score for the IELTS is 6.5.
- International applicants who have received a baccalaureate or a master's degree from a college/university/institution in any of the following countries are exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement: Australia, Belize, British Caribbean and British West Indies, Canada (except Quebec), England, Guyana, Republic of Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Scotland, the United States, and Wales.
